Sheriff Craig Webre announced the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office will conduct a Seat Belt Checkpoint in Lafourche Parish during the daylight hours of Wednesday, October 8. Deputies will be checking motorists for seat belt and safety seat violations, as well as other violations such as expired inspection tags.
This checkpoint is part of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office's year-long campaign designed to raise awareness for these types of violations and make the highways of the parish safer for all motorists.
Sheriff Webre is reminding drivers that seat belts are the most effective safety feature ever invented and have helped save thousands of lives. Per Louisiana State law (R.S. 32:295.1), upon conviction of the first offense, the driver faces a $25.00 fine including court costs, and any subsequent conviction carries a $50.00 fine including court costs.
