Sheriff Craig Webre announced the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will be sending out 51,290 tax notices through the mail this week to Lafourche Parish property owners. Of that number, 13,760 are homestead exempt and owe no taxes. A total of $112,542,421.32 in property taxes are now due and can be paid online, in person, or by mail. These taxes help fund all aspects of public service in the parish such as roads, drainage, levees, law enforcement, fire departments, hospitals, ambulance services, schools, and recreation.
Payments can be made online by clicking HERE, and an online convenience fee will be applied. Payments can also be made in person at the LPSO Administrative Office (200 Canal Boulevard, Thibodaux) and the South Lafourche Sub-station (102 W. 91st Street, Galliano). The offices are open weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., except for December 25. Payments are accepted through cash, check, money order, or credit/debit card. A 3% surcharge will be applied to card payments. Partial payments of at least 25% of the total amount due are accepted online and at the LPSO offices. All partial payments are due by March 31, 2014. Failure to complete partial payments by that date will result in the collection company assessing a 10% collection fee on the unpaid amount.
Property tax payments can also be paid in full with a check or money order through standard mail to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, P.O. Box 5608, Thibodaux, LA 70302. Payments are also accepted at Lafourche Parish branches of the following banks: Coastal Commerce Bank, Community Bank, First American Bank, Regions Bank, South Lafourche Bank, State Bank & Trust, and Whitney Bank. Please note Capital One Bank has indicated they will NO LONGER accept property tax payments.
Property taxes are due by December 31, 2013. Beginning on January 1, 2014, unpaid taxes become delinquent with interest accruing at a rate of 1% per month until paid (LA R.S. 47:2127). Taxes that remain unpaid by February 1, 2014, will continue to incur the monthly interest, as well as an additional 10% collection cost on the unpaid amount (LA R.S. 47:2062), and additional costs associated with the tax sale. If the property is sold at tax sale, the owner is subject to lose the homestead exemption. Property sold at tax sale may be redeemed up to three years from the date of recordation, but a 5% penalty and 1% interest charge per month will apply (LA R.S. 47:2243). The owner must contact the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office to redeem the property.
Homeowners should always check with their mortgage company first before paying a bill to avoid double payment. Anyone who bought property in 2013 should know the tax bill will more than likely be mailed to the previous owner of the property, but the current owner is responsible for all taxes due.
